Service Description

Build big. In this advanced handbuilding class, you'll take on an ambitious projects in the studio: a large-scale, sculptural, and functional coffee table, built entirely by hand. You'll work with large forms at a scale that demands a different approach — sculpting with intention, managing weight and structure as you build, and learning to work efficiently so your piece stays workable from start to finish. We'll also discuss glazing technique in depth, preparing you to finish a piece at this scale with confidence. This class is best suited for artists who are able to put in independent study time outside of class, in addition to regular sessions — large-scale work moves at its own pace, and the extra hours are what carry a piece like this to completion. Prerequisites Please confirm through email if this class is suitable for you. Independent Study Independent study hours are highly encouraged for this class. At the advanced level, class time is focused on technique and problem-solving for a piece of this scale — independent practice time, during or after class sessions, is what will actually carry your project to completion. Firing & Timeline Your class cost includes 5 firing tickets. Because large-scale pieces need significant time to dry fully before they can go in the kiln, bisque firing can take up to one month after your piece is finished. Artists will need to return during independent study time to glaze their piece once it's bisque fired. What to Bring Hand towel — the studio does not provide towels or paper towels. Apron (optional). The studio provides basic tools, but for a project at this scale, consider building out your kit with a needle tool, X-Acto knife, serrated metal rib, soft ribs, and cleaning sponges. Come build a piece that anchors a room.
