Service Description

No wheel required. Just your hands, a block of clay, and a little curiosity. In this 8-week beginner series, you'll learn the three foundational handbuilding techniques, pinch, coil, and slab, and use them to shape pieces that are entirely your own. You'll start with pinch: pressing your thumb into a ball of clay and feeling a small bowl take shape, then thinning and refining its walls. From there, you'll roll out long, even coils and stack, blend, and smooth them into taller forms. Finally, you'll roll and cut slabs, learning to score and slip your joins so seams stay strong, and build boxes, trays, and more structured shapes. Along the way, you'll explore surface texture, carving, and simple decoration, and finish with an introduction to glazing to bring your pieces to life. Class Format 8 weeks, 2 hours per session. Prerequisites None. This class is beginner friendly. Clay usage is unlimited throughout class. Your class cost includes 8 firing tickets. Unused tickets don't expire, so you can use them in a future class or independent study module, and you can always purchase more if you need them. Age Requirement 15+ What to Bring Hand towel (the studio does not provide towels or paper towels) Apron (optional) Comfortable, closed-toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting messy No trimming tool is needed for this class. The studio provides basic tools, but feel free to build your own kit with items like sponges, ribs, a needle tool, and an X-Acto knife. Pickup Policy Pieces are ready for pickup 10-14 days after your last session. The studio does not store pieces for more than one month after your class ends, so please finish and pick up your pieces promptly. Come get your hands dirty and build something wonderful.
