Service Description

In this 12-week course, you’ll explore the versatile world of slab building to create both functional and decorative vessels. While focusing on traditional slab-building techniques—working with soft and leather-hard slabs—you’ll also be encouraged to think outside the box, experimenting with form and structure to push the boundaries of what can be done with clay. The course will introduce you to essential skills like rolling, cutting, and joining slabs, while allowing for creative freedom in shaping three-dimensional pieces. You’ll be free to explore both precise, clean forms and more abstract, expressive shapes as you build your personal style. We'll guide you through working with leather-hard slabs to maintain structure and integrity, as well as manipulating soft slabs to create more organic forms. As your pieces come together, we'll explore ways to bring them to life with decorative techniques, from layered painting with underglazes to adding texture and sculpted details. Decorating techniques will include screen printing, mishima, sgrafitto, washes, colored clay, and texture exploration. This course is perfect for those looking to challenge their creativity while grounding their practice in strong foundational techniques.
